The game stores your progress in your browser's local storage: best times, medals, ghost runs, settings and how your ball looks. If you join the leaderboard, it also stores a secret key that proves your times are yours. This is only there so the game works. We don't use cookies or anything else to track you. Clearing this site's data in your browser removes all of it, including your leaderboard key, so you'd have to join again under a new name.

If you join the leaderboard

We store:

• Your nickname. It's shown publicly next to your times. Please don't use your real name.
• A random player number, and a scrambled (hashed) copy of your secret key. We can't turn this back into the key.
• Your best time on each track, and a recording of how you steered on that run: which of the game's three controls (left, right and jump) were held at each moment. No other keys are ever recorded. We use this to check the run is real. It's also public: other players can watch it or race it as a ghost.
• A log of the runs you send: a short note of when, which track, the time, and whether it was accepted. We use this to spot cheating.

We may rename or remove nicknames that are offensive or pretend to be someone else, and remove times that look like cheating.

Other companies involved

• Cloudflare runs the game's website, server and database. When you join the leaderboard or send a time, Cloudflare Turnstile quietly checks you're a real person and not a bot. That check uses your IP address and information about your browser. Cloudflare also keeps short-lived server logs, which include IP addresses. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
• OpenAI may be used to check that a new nickname isn't offensive. Only the nickname is sent, nothing else. See OpenAI's privacy policy.

Why we use this information

To run a fair leaderboard: showing the fastest times, checking runs are genuine, and keeping out cheats, bots and offensive names. Under data protection law, this is our legitimate interest in running the game. We don't use your information for anything else.

How long we keep it

• Your nickname and leaderboard times: until you ask us to anonymise or delete them. When a track or the game's physics changes, it gets a fresh leaderboard, and the old one is kept but no longer shown.
• The log of runs you've sent (just when, which track, the time and whether it was accepted, not the runs themselves): 12 months, then those log entries are deleted automatically. Your best times and their recordings aren't affected.
• Cloudflare's server logs: a few days.

Your rights

You can ask to see the information we hold about you, have it corrected, or have it removed. Open any track's leaderboard in the game and press My data. It gives you a code, which only your device can get, so it proves the request is really from you. Email it to contact@ballativity.com and tell us what you'd like. The code works for 7 days. You can also change your nickname yourself at any time, on the same screen.

When you ask us to remove your data, we anonymise it. Your nickname is replaced with a random guest name (like "Guest 4829371"), your times are disconnected from your device, and the log of runs you've sent is deleted. We don't keep any note of who you were. Your times stay on the leaderboard, so the rankings other players earned don't change, but they can no longer be linked to you. If you'd rather your times were deleted completely, just say so and we'll do that instead.

If you're unhappy with how we've handled your information, you can complain to a data protection authority. In the UK, that's the Information Commissioner's Office.

Children

Ballativity is for everyone. You don't need to tell us anything about yourself to play. If you're young, ask a grown-up before joining the leaderboard, and pick a made-up nickname rather than your real name.

Changes

If we change how we use information, we'll update this page and the date at the top.
